Hello Randi and all: There might be a chance that no password at all was set in the beginning. When prompted, try simply pressing return and see what happens. I cannot make any promises though that is what happened to me when I purchased my last Mac mini. It was previously owned by someone else and I was prompted with the password. Not knowing it I summoned the Mac store where I bought it. They suggested enter and poof ... success.
