James, why is that a shame? Surely you recognize that turning off the screen would generally not make a lot of sense. These aren't machines designed exclusively for the blind, so turning off the screen would only benefit those of us who would not typically use the screen. It just isn't one of those features Apple or any other computer manufacturer would really consider. You have the option to turn the screen brightness down to the point where no one could read it and that alone would help conserve battery life. However, to say it is a shame seems a little odd when you consider the larger scope here. I am not sure what purpose this feature would serve even on a lInux machine, but maybe there is something I'm missing here beyond the possible extension of battery life.
