I did a little digging and I believe I found the solution. Open system preferences. Go to Quicktime tab. (let me know if you need help navigating to this.)
Under the "Advanced" tab there is a section on plugin preferences. In there is a "MIME types" button. Hit that button. There is table. You will have to navigate down to "Audio - Audio only file formats Expand this and uncheck any formats you want to download instead of play.
