Hi Anna,

I notice that your question on how to stop an MP3 file on the Web from
playing has gone unanswered. Cara Quinn posted a solution to this
that is in the list archives, and you can find a copy of her
instructions written up as a guide at the lioncourt.com site:

http://www.lioncourt.com/guides-tutorials/keyboard-control-of-streaming-content-in-safari/
(Keyboard control of streaming media in Safari)

Very briefly, although QuickTime is playing and there appears to be
nothing that VoiceOver announces, you can still get control of some
functions if you interact with the HTML area (VO-Shift-Down Arrow) and
then route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor (VO-Command-F5)
in the event that your navigation options in the VoiceOver utility are
not set to have "Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor" checked.

Even though you won't hear any results of your interaction, etc.
you'll be able to get some control of the playback using the same
controls you use in iTunes: pressing the space bar lets you play and
pause; Command-Left arrow rewinds; Command-Right Arrow fast forwards.

Take a read through Cara's guide at the link I gave.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Esther
