This is correct. To switch between the NVIDIA 9400M to the 9600M GT and 
back you need to make the change in the energy saver preferences and 
then log out and back in again. Engadget was complaining that the 
chipset doesn't require this and the Sony laptops just have a button 
which requires no login/out process.
