Hello Les, First of all, you can select what appears on your Desktop by opening Finder Preferences (Command-comma) and checking the items under the General tab.
Secondly, keeping applications on the Desktop is not the Mac way of doing things. We have the Dock for that. When an application is running, it will always appear in the Dock. At that point, you can choose to keep it there by going to it in the Dock, pressing Control- Option-Shift-m to open a contextual menu and selecting Keep in Dock.
