Yeah, I had a lot of performance issues shortly after a Mavericks update too last month. I wasn’t aware of spotlight index rebuilds or any of that but the only real outstanding issue here now is Mail still seems sluggish at times but over all, the machine is quite workable now. Another thing that can bog down the system is Time Machine. Between mail being regrouped due to gmail changes and a new system upgrade, Time Machine was backing up a lot of data to an encrypted external hard drive. That chewed up a lot of cycles for me.
Outside of mail.app, I would say my Mac Mini is running along pretty well with Mavericks now.
