I have also noticed this as I have a lot of different voices for different apps. What I have noticed when everything is working there is only a slight delay when switching from say mail to safari, but for some reason every now and then things slow to a halt almost making the computer unusable. When this happens I restart my computer. Yes this is frustrating as I hate restarting but it seems to get everything playing nice together again.
