Yep, the reason for that you can't use Disk Utility to repartition is that it doesn't yet support manipulating CoreStorage groups, which is what FileVault-encrypted volumes and Fusion Drives are made from. So if you have one of these, you have to drop to the command line to delete the CoreStorage group before you can go back to partitioning with Disk Utility. In your case though, erasing the volume was perfectly sufficient to get you reinstalled, so you should be fine.
