Time Machine runs verifications every so often, to make sure your backups are sound. I can assure you that even when I'm backed up to a Time Capsule, I occasionally have to erase the disk and start again. Rather that than not have a current backup. I know it's annoying. I'd also advise you think about a second backup, if you want that extra peace of mind--perhaps a remote backup using something like Arq of all your critical stuff.
