Well, I figured I'd better grab iTools and give it a go. With respect to
importing music and finding it and exporting music, I cannot complain. It's
perfectly accessible: However, a word of caution is in order. IF you are
going to use iTools to import your music in to your iPhone or other iDevice,
you'd better make sure all your meta data tagging is absolutely correct.
ITools provides no means of helping you do this: therefore, You need to see to
it that you have a reliable third party tagg editor that you know you can rely
on and that you can use to sequentially place track numbers in to files for
you. IF you don't do this, you will discover that all your music will wind up
in the dreaded "unknown" album and "unknown artiest" area. While it is true
that Amadeus Pro can help a good deal with this, you need to understand that
you will need to number each track manually by going in to the file's info
window once inside Amadeus pro and finding and manually placing each and every
track number appropriately for each file. Say you have 25 files per album.
You will need to open them all in amadeus Pro, them, number each and every one
of them by hand as the batch processor cannot do this automatically for you.
Make sure also that your album and artiest names are tagged correctly also.

Well, that's for the music side. As for the video side, here's where iTools
falls down. The actual import process couldn't be easier, but, somehow, right
at the end of trying to import a video I shot using my iPhone, and trying to
bring that video back in to my iPhone, I always hit an "unknown error". Upon
looking through my movies in the iPhone video app, I saw my movie that I had
imported but it refused to play. This is the reason why I feel that, at this
time, I cannot recommend iTools. A shame really: because, it's almost perfect
but for this one major flaugh. Not only that, but, the ease with which iTones
handles meta data tagging and greatly helps the work flow of converting any
file or batch of files in to desired formats, and the ease with which albums
can be added to and taken away from the iTunes library system causes me to
recommend that, at this time, it is best to learn to make peace with how iTunes
works and how utilitarian it is for dealing with iPhone management. The issues
I have trying to import iPhone shot videos back in to my iPhone may have
something to do with the propriaritary nature of iPhone management and as Chris
said earlier, third party solutions usually if not always fall short in some
way or other. What makes this a shame is that iTools is so close to getting it
right that if only we could contact the developer and indicate these issues,
this third party solution might just be a good alternative for iDevice
management.
