After a little more playing, it seems this might have something to do with the size of the file and the time it takes to load. One of those files I am now able to read, so it might be that it just took a long time to load, which would still be a shame as one of the best things about the Mac was the speedy response to open PDFs, unlike on Windows.
I'm also now having problems using the VO-f command to search, though the search feature from inside the Preview toolbar seems to work well.
