Hi Phil,
did you try this method in Numbers version 3.5 (2109)? I’mnot quite sure but it 
seems not really to work that way anymore. All I can do is sorting up or down. 
But if you could try it out and tell wether it worked still for you in this 
version of Numbers it would be a motivation for me to play around a little more.
