I am afraid that this does happen from time to time. Even when you have all the 
songs imported I sometimes get iTunes Match freezing an d get a message 
eventually that iTunes is unable to contact  the store.

I do not  know why this happens but suspect a capacity problem on the Apple 
end. Generally I have to restart iTunes to clear the problem.
You should not lose what you have already imported.
