Yes, first upgrade iTunes. I would recommend doing at least one back up. Personally I make sure Time Machine is up to date and then use SuperDuper to make a bootable image of my boot disk.
The next step is do go to the App Store and download the installer, this shows up in your applications folder as application called something like “Install Mac OS” when you double click on this it will verify your system and then load enough information into temporary space and the recovery partition to to an n place install. After answering 1 or 2 questions and waiting a couple of hours your upgraded computer will be ready for you. Note I did this on a 2009 Mac Book Pro with a standard hard disk. If you have an SSD drive things will go a bit faster.
