Hello and welcome,
First let me say this group is invaluable. Second, I would advise initially for
you to almost totally concentrate on using your Mac for whatever you normally
would have used windows for. None of us here our windows bashers, we all
respect the fact that it has its place. However the platforms are very
different. The learning curve is definitely there.
At least with your Mac, it's easier to fix on your own if you should happen to
mess up a setting, or become skittish than would be if you were in windows.
Dive into it, use it, ask away. We have all been there. In addition to
applevis.com you might also want to check out maccessibility.com they too have
very informative podcasts.
Any of us will also do what we can to help you.

Open System Preferences and choose the Users and Groups button. Just past the
toolbar is a list of users; down arrow on that list until you hear "Login
Options". VO-right until you find the "Use VoiceOver on the logon screen" and
check it (you may have to activate the "Lock" button at the end of the window
first).

I doubt it, but given that your machine is still new, it's worth heading to an
Apple Store to get it checked out. I've never noticed this problem, and I can't
think of anything that would cause it. Unless your hands are covering the
speakers somehow? They are near the keyboard on some models.

Of course, that's why we're here. :) Ask away, and don't forget to check out
www.applevis.com for tons more resources, including a page just for VoiceOver
users new to the Mac.
