This behaviour started since Yosemite 10.10.2 on my mac. The only way round it for me is to close the message and open it again and then I can just use my arrow keys. Initially, in 10.10.2 it would happen just on the first message I would attempt to open. But in 10.10.3 it happens more regularly. It's truly annoying.
