Just install Xcode and you will have a complete development environment. Clang is now the native C/C++/OBJC/Swift compiler for BSD systems including of course OS X. The BSD project abandoned the GCC tool chain because of a revision in GPL version 3. That being said, you still get flex and bison with the Xcode command line tools. You can still install gcc through macports or home brew. Xcode is totally accessible to vo but quirky.
