I actually use the preview pain in Mail to read my messages. All you do is highlight a message, vo-right until you either hear the message headers such as from and to or the message content itself. Then vo-shift-down arrow to interact. You may then have to VO-right arrow until you hear what sounds like the message content. Note if you land on the first message, you can't always read using standard arrow keys. But if you press delete and the next message is displayed, you can read with standard arrow keys. By "standard" I mean without VO keys.
