I had a Mac Mini for years (still do, but the drive is shot). I hooked up a $12 
USB keyboard from Wal-Mart, and a monitor we'd had for at least five years from 
Dell, and it worked just fine. Apple computers don't need apple peripherals, 
but the Apple stuff tends to last longer and look better. Of course, my $12 
keyboard is still going strong, even if it isn't very comfortable.
