Hi Mark,

Are you setting up ethernet for the first time?  Remember that you can  
set up a location with your selected connecting preferences.  As Frank  
said, you'll find information under the Network menu of System  
Preferences.  The other way I force network changes if I don't want to  
create a new location is by bringing up a browser under the new  
settings.  When you can't connect, the system will "assist you" in  
diagnosing changes by prompting you for network connection  
information, and you can change there (for example, from AirPort to  
Ethernet).
