Open your messages application and open the preferences with a command comma. Select the general tab in the toolbar. Near the end of the selections you'll find AppleScript handler: popup button, select Speak Events.applescript. This should provide what you're looking for. You may not hear "buddy is typing" unless you're focused in the message area. HTH
