That's a system-wide shortcut, one VMWare may not be able to intercept in time. 
My only solution--and there may be better ones, as I'm not a VMWare user--is to 
disable it completely.

In System Preferences, choose Keyboard, then the Shortcuts tab. Select the 
Mission Control category in the first table, and you should find a bunch of 
control-arrow shortcuts in the second table. Disable any you wish by using the 
checkbox next to each one; the ones you're after are move left/right one space.
