It's a way to get an overview of all your desktops and open apps. It shows every window open in every app, for instance, so you can go right to that window without switching to the app and using cmd-accent a bunch of times. I never use Mission Control personally, but it can come in handy if you have tons of windows open and don't want to cmd-tab and cmd-accent a lot of times. Granted, Mission Control may end up being as many keystrokes; you have to bring it up, interact with the group of apps/windows, then vo-arrow to the one you want.
