Hi Erik,

The gesture that turns off speech on the iphone is a double-tap with  
three fingers.  I know it seems unlikely, but is it possible you did  
this by accident?  It's a toggle, so the next time it happens, try  
doing a three-finger double-tap,  and see if speech starts up again.  
If it does, you know what's causing your problem.
