I noticed exactly the same thing. On the very right, there is a slider that let's you adjust the speaking rate. However, I noticed that, every time I open the KNFB reader, the speed goes back to 20% (twenty percent). That means that I have to adjust it every single time. It makes no difference whether I adjust it in the settings menu or on the fly.
