I don't know about ssl, but unison worked wonders with easy news, and I'm pretty sure it uses a sertificate. It for sure does on the web.
The strength of unison is it's ability to browse groups by thread and download whole threads at once. Each thread goes into it's own folder, making sorting completed downloads very easy. I wish I could be more help with the problems you are having, but my easynews account is dead, so I have nothing to test with.
