Hi Erik, It sounds like you may have your local backups enabled. If you have Time Machine enabled but do not have your backup drive connected, TM saves backups to your local drive.
Needless to say, this can take up an awful lot of space and be incredibly confusing to trace if you are not aware of the feature. These backups are managed automatically by TM and should limit themselves to 80% of your available drive space and be deleted or shrunken when space is needed for other processes. Personally, I have chosen to disable local backups as I back up my machine frequently and redundantly, so I would rather have my SSD space back. There are terminal commands you can enter to disable or enable TM local backups which require that you enter your system password. So if you are not comfortable with the terminal I would suggest not doing this right away until you get familiar with it, and are sure that this is something you need or wish to do. If you have experience with the terminal, here is a link to the info you will need. http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2013/07/view-disable-local-snapshots-backups-in-time-machine.html I will not post the terminal commands here since not only are they not meant for the average user to be entering but the terminal may not be forgiving of mistakes so it can be easily possible to make catastrophic changes to your system.
