I was surprised to find Target carries about 50 different record players. What's up with that? You can get a USB record player for about $80 which comes in its own suitcase. Time to get all that vinyl into iTunes before it wears away.

Scott,

Reading your note caused me to chuckle. I am in my late twenties and
still have a vinyl player, tape player, and CD player, all attached to
an old amp. When I picked up my new laptop I was shocked to find no CD
drive in it.

To say the least I have not made the full leap yet.

I am interested in reading more about Tidal.

than Spoify and probably Apple Music. from my iPhone

Vaughn, I’m with you I find this an interesting topic and to relate it to
the list I’m interested in how Apple really changed this game
dramatically. It hit me the other day I don’t own a CD player any more.
My laptops don’t have the drive, I don’t have one in my audio system, my
car doesn’t have one and to really stress the point I don’t think my
family owns a CD player. (forget turntable or other media) Everything I
have now is centered around Apple or Google, streaming boxes and really
more of an on demand model than whole album model like you said. You
really make some interesting points. It’s a total shift. I don’t even
have the big wooden furniture to hold the media and all the playback
equipment. Everything now is thin panels, glass and metal shelving and
tiny with the benefit of being wireless. Wow.

I wonder if it’s less money for musicians but more fairly distributed or
just less money for the big names. I would have to think with the cost of
entry being so low now a lot more musicians as you said could get their
name and product out there. No need for a label. Hell you could probably
start to make a decent living with a good regional act. I’d be interested
in what other musicians think as well between the old and new model and
which they prefer. I’m also really interested in how Apple has changed
the game by allowing the Artist to publish directly.

Hi Scott,

I am interested in hearing what other's see as I am a musician, too.
Thank you for your insight. I heard what I mentioned on a music
program through NPR. However, it is also true that one person's expert
opinion is just one and there are a variety of them out there.
I think the bigger picture is that musicians make less money when it
comes to the singles or selling of whole albums. It is also fair to
say that musicians have more opportunities to market themselves
because if the digital era of social media and music applications.
Where one may lack the other may improve.

Vaughn, I’m not sure this is true. While it’s probably true that the
artist
makes less they also get to keep more of the take per sale than they
would
have with a label. Remember, Apple for example if memory servers gives
you
70 cents on the dollar where you might only get 10 or 20 with a regular
record deal.
Another thing I know first hand is artists are making more money in
the
performance space now than ever. My family has a business that supports
all
the shows for the casinos and venus in the North East and there’s more
work
than ever. Casinos especially up here have large venus now and have
big
name shows come through. The money being made performing is huge.

If you’re unsure, ask Adele who moved 2.5 million full albums on iTunes
in
one weekend.:)

Interesting topic though. The music industry has changed much like
others
have, technology has that effect.

I still prefer to buy physical records because I know it will fund the
