Yes, Chris, I'm now certain it's my imagination.  After playing with Tom
for a few days, I went back to the sample offered in the VoiceOver Utility
that anyone can hear without downloading the voice, and the sample and
downloaded voices are pretty much the same.  I notice that Tom, and perhaps
the other Nuance voices as well, have their default volumes set a bit lower
than that of Alex.  I get the impression that more fine-tuning of Alex's
voice has taken place when compared to the tweaking of other voices.
