Windows (and Linux) is for games. An XP VM will do. It runs audio games and screen readers, now unchanging forever, that will handle such basic functions as console output correctly. If only OS X’s terminal support worked, MUDing and Interactive Fiction would at least be alternative gaming possibilities on the Mac. But alas. I sometimes use Windows for other things too, like setting up printers with better Windows setup utilities, updating firmware on devices, handling email in Thunderbird for lists with specific requirements, or browsing specific web pages that VO chokes on, and occasionally for silent braille operation, but by and large it’s the games. I don’t start Windows very often at all.
I’m not sure if I’d miss OS X if I were to move back to Windows full-time, although built-in spell check and a joyful, fuss-free experience that I can get without sighted help are certainly things I immensely value. The tedious and long-lived VO bugs that Windows users don’t have are, of course, things I don’t. I will revisit later versions of Windows once Microsoft decide to respect user privacy again. -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list.
