I believe the iPhone uses the main connection so the airplay data would 
traverse the router.  This makes sense.  What I’m not sure is if the two radios 
talk together on the WiFi side once the session is established or if the access 
point always has to stay in the middle, I’d suspect the ladder.

Try it but expect the router to be in the mix.  You might try changing WiFi 
channels and settings to improve performance.
