Hello Bill, What you are seeing is definitely not normal. This is some of what we say about spell-checking in our book, and we tested it out on two different Macs: "In the Edit menu/Spelling and Grammar submenu, Pages provides for correcting spelling automatically, checking grammar with spelling, and checking spelling as you type. With this last setting selected, VoiceOver will alert you to a misspelt word as soon as you press the spacebar or any punctuation. A popover appears with suggestions. Use the right arrow to go through these, and press Return on the one you want, or just press Escape if you don’t wish to do anything. This setting also allows the VoiceOver command Find Next Misspelled Word to work.”
It might be worth reinitialising the PRAM.
