Are you sure you haven’t just got iCloud Keychain turned on everywhere? That has synced Wi-Fi passwords since forever now. And if you also had iPhone hotspot turned on, your other devices would still be able to get the connectivity needed to update themselves with your new password, as long as they were configured with the hotspot or were using handoff to join to it.
