It does seem to be an axiom of Apple that one should buy their products from 
Apple, but their accessories from anywhere but Apple, yes. :)

The way I do it is quite simple: check the Apple Store to see what Apple 
recommends, and then go and find them elsewhere.  This usually, but not always, 
produces good results.

I did get the Milanese band from Apple, though, after I bought my sport watch.  
Not an ideal fit, but I didn’t know of any other suppliers at the time and 
didn’t really like the other offerings.  I expect the market has developed 
quite a bit since, though.
