Security is simply levels of difficulty in being cracked and usually is a tradeoff with usability. In this case Apple had a self-destruct mechanism so the FBI couldn't brute force the password before all the encrypted content went poof. So the FBI was not trying to break the encrypted data directly but the lock on the data. The "master key" they were asking Apple to make was to remove the "poof code" in a custom build of iOS. They also wanted to attempt the code entry via the USB port and remove the escalating time delays between failed attempts. That would allow them to harness the device to an automated "lock picker" which would just go through every possible 4-digit combination. Apple balked at being forced to implement such a security defeating solution.

We'll never know how the case would have turned out because plan B seems to have become viable. Through a 3rd party there apparently is a way to crack open the case and clone the data in bulk to another device. So they now have a poof-proof way to keep trying combinations. If the 10th try fails just re-clone the data. That said, this has to be a slow and expensive process so it's still only going to get cracked in really important cases, not just for the fun of checking your favorite playlists. In the end, I'm not sure there really is any uncrackable solution once somebody has physical access to the hardware. Just a matter of time and money. Just like physical access to your home, the door and window locks really just to keep honest people honest but would provide no real protection against a determined thief. My home is not a vault and that's probably a good thing.

So the Fat Bald and Ignorant agency did not hack the phone, the outsourced it to real professionals in this case the Israeli Intelligence. CelleBrite is a company that spun out of Israel that does exactly that, cracks cell phones and communications.

I think it’s interesting now that apple is considering bring legal action to find out how they did it.

My understanding is they copied the data digitally off the hardware and then brute forced it but others may have more complete details.

Thank you
