I have to agree on the airport devices, I've got a couple of airport express  
One is sitting in a box not currently needed but the other is working solid as.

The only thing it is lacking to me is AC wifi 
But if I gues they hold off a bit longer then may be they will release a new 
one with AD wifi which is currently being worked on by wifi specialists.

I have to say I’ve made similar moves recently.  I’ve started using open VPN on 
a linux virtual host as a VPN server replacing a hardware firewall and it’s 
such more stable / configurable.  Not as pretty of course but who cares.

Your assessment of the Apple airport line is spot on.  I love them as access 
points, and that’s it.  I put a different router in front of them.  I’m about 
to start the hunt for a new router as my service is upgrading to gigabit.  
Can’t decide whether sticking with consumer is where I should be at home or 
whether I need to move the real gear out of the lab in to the house network.
