Hi,

In the latest version of Numbers—and it seems since about version 3.6—VoiceOver
will say the row or column number before saying the contents of the selected
cell when navigating by cell using either just the arrow keys or the VO and
arrow keys together in a table without both header columns and header rows.

Let me explain a little more.

VoiceOver has always said—and still says—the header column name before the
contents of the selected cell when navigating left or right in a table. And it
has always said—and still says—the header row name before the contents of the
selected cell when navigating up or down in a table. This is extremely helpful
to explain the significance of the data in the cell.

The thing that has changed in the recent version(s) of Numbers is that when
there is no header column VoiceOver will say the name of the row (e.g. “Row
27”) before the contents of the selected cell when moving up and down in a
table. And if there’s no header row, VoiceOver will say the column name (e.g.
“Column 27”) before the selected cell's contents when moving left or right in
the table.

I find this behaviour more of a hinderance than a help. Say we have a table
with 1 header row and 0 header columns in which the leftmost column contains
dates. If I want to quickly skim through the leftmost column to find a
particular date, I have to listen to VoiceOver saying, “Row 2,”, “Row 3”, “Row
4”, etc before it says the date. So it slows me down significantly, without
helping at all. VoiceOver has always said—and still says—the name/coordinates
of the selected cell after it says the cell’s contents. So a VoiceOver user
will always know where in the table he or she is. Given this, the extra
information of the row/column number is unnecessary.

My feedback/request is: please revert to the old behaviour where VoiceOver only
says the name of the row/column if there is a header column/row, and otherwise
omits that information.

Tested with Numbers version 3.6.1 (2566)
