Hi Helga, Your friend would want to boot into recovery mode. Just hold
down command+r on boot-up. I usually hold it down, wait until you hear
the boot tone, and then count to like 30 before releasing the keys.
After that wait like 2 minutes and then hit command+f5 to get VO up.
You'll find yourself in a table one of which is disc utility. Select
disc utility, select your macintosh hd and click on erase. Make sure
the options are HFS+ journaled and hit erase. After that close disc
utility which will bring you back to the table of options. Next select
reinstall mac OSX. And you'll be all set
