Hi,

If you're speaking of the ability of someone to connect remotely to your Mac, 
then gain access to both your Mac and external HD data, then I guess maximum 
security would be total physical disconnection.  If ejected, there are terminal 
commands that a user can implement that will re-mount that drive if still 
physically connected.  Most people aren't versed in this sort of disk 
management, but those who have the know-how to remotely break into your machine 
likely have that knowledge, or access to it.  Now, knowing all this, it's not 
particularly easy to let someone gain access to your machine in that manner 
without you doing something to allow it.
