Yeah, basically, the part you need for Windows integration is OS X Server, which performs authentication for AD on behalf of Mac users that log in and need Mac services, especially the Profile Manager to manage clients. You use Profile Manager to push out configuration changes, or like I said, some centralised third-party service. However, services themselves should be run under Linux and/or Windows, because they really aren’t flexible and/or robust enough under OS X Server (particularly notable is that SMB support is still very flaky). We no longer have the capacity to run an NT domain so there is an expectation that if you run Mac in your Windows network you will end up using a Windows server to provide many of your services, including Exchange.
Summary: if you have a first-party integration solution, you need a Mac, but Windows is still giving you better support of Macs than OS X Server itself does for certain services. Some people think (and I agree with them) that Apple should make OS X virtualise on Xen/KVM/HyperV, and with background in mind you can see why.
