Install OS X El Capitan.app is the file name and should be 6.22gigs. If its not in the Applications folder but you cannot download it, there is either a copy in trash or on a connected external drive. Empty trash and/or disconnect all external drives.

Where would I look beside the app folder for such an app? It isn’t in the app

That will happen if there is an Install OS X anywhere on your system.
Disconnect all external drives and delete that file from Applications and dump
the trash. Then try again.

I had some time today where I didn’t need to use my mac so I decided to
download and install the upgrade. It kept pausing and when it only had a minute
to go I went and did something else. As it turns out I still have Yosemite. I
went back to the app store and attempted the download again. Nothing happened.
Then the download link was dimmed. Is there some trick to this?
