Hi Scott,

I must respectfully disagree with the minorities not quaking in fear. And I
preface my point with this. Earlier in the thread, you mentioned putting your
ear to the street/, if you listened to the actual people you knew it was going
to happen. In short, your saying media and polls got it wrong but, if you
looked around you, the writing was on the wall for a Trump win. Then you
followed that up by using the same pulling stats you said weren’t a good
predictor of actual attitudes. So I’m just curious, how many minorities
especially those who have immigrated to the U.S. do you live among, and listen
to? I ask because, the U.S. is extremely segregated in regards to where we
live. If your on this list and your Black, chances are most of your neighbors
are the same. If your White, same applies. I happen to be Black, and a person
who came to the U.S. from another country at a young age. But in saying that, I
have lived, and live around many who fit that same description and their
families. And at least looking around me, the demographic your mentioning, they
are definitely quaking in fear. From naturalized citizens and legal residence
wondering if they can somehow have the carpet pulled from under them and get
deported to, some wondering if they will be thrown in jail because they were at
a BLM protest, and they might be labeled as terrorists.
I won’t comment if I think their anxiety is just. I will just say its real
among many ..

As far as the racial component, I think it played a factor for sure. Most
things in the U.S. does. I think its just that for many Whites, its a non
factor in their daily lives so, their is no skin in the game when it comes to
racism. Its purely academic for most. Its like blind people trying to explain
to sighted people how hard it is for a person who’s blind to find work fitting
their skill set an education. They might agree with you, recognize the problem,
make all the right noises but, since it doesn’t directly affect them, they are
more likely to undervalue the impact it has on a blind person’s life, and
outlook on life for that matter. Further more, since that person isn’t directly
responsible for that discrimination, they take solace in that, and sorta look
away from the issue. But in reality, they are the only people who can truly fix
the issue. So to complete the comparison, Unless enough sighted people decided
that fair and equal treatment in the work place is a high priority, there is
little a blind person can do to change their lot collectively. Same with
racism. So for example, if you are white, acknowledge racism, find it to be
terrible, but downplay the affect that has on the every day life of a person of
color, racism will persist. And there is little a person of color can do. Its
up the the majority, either sighted/able bodied, or white to treat the issue as
if it affected them personally because, it takes a change in attitude more than
laws. Like your Uncle marching with Dr. King. Think about that for a second.
civil rights movement, it could have never happened without White people with
the courage and conviction to physically participate in the righting of a
wrong. And hence more validating to other White people that the problem was
real.

I’ll tell you what Scott, I was in Manhattan a while back, hanging out with
some friends. Heading home, I asked one of my white friends to hail a cab for
me. He thought I was nuts. So we did an experiment. I had a Black friend of
mine try. No cabs stopped. he was at it for 15 minutes. White friend tried? Cab
in 30 seconds. And for my White friend, that was the first up close and
personal view of how race is a factor for people of color every single day of
our lives if we know it or not.

Just my 2 cents. :)
