OK, fair enough.

Hi Chris,

No A bridge isn't needed however I use one and for the simple reason I mainly use the 5.0 GHz wifi frequency and in that case the bridge is required.

And it also allows me to keep the sonos sepperate from my main network through the routing I have setup.

You don't need a bridge to connect up a Sonos system. I, for one don't use a bridge, and it works fantastically.

On another note, did anyone get the V7 yet of the Sonos controller and try accessibility with it on the Mac? I'll be doing so shortly to see if it's any better.

Chris.

My Sonos is connected to wifi through a wireless router and a Sonos Bridge,
although i don’t know if the bridge plays a part in connecting or not.
The app is surprisingly accessible both on iOs and Android but the
experience on the mac isn’t so nice.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

I've been following some of the discussions on Sonos because for quite a
while I've been wanting to go that way for my listening. I wonder
whether anybody on the list has Sonos connect:AMP. In its description
it says that one could connect old speakers to it and use Sonos wifi
capabilities to airplay music to it. I happen to have a pair of good
speakers which are very old but I'm unwilling to get rid of them
because of the quality of sound they used to give me. So I'm thinking I
might be able to save them by getting Sonos Connect:AMP. Also, Sonos
connect:AMP can be connected to the home network via ethernet. Could I
plug it into my home network via the ethernet port on apple tv or apple
express? I'd appreciate any comments.

Hi Simon,

That’s correct, the receiver only is $3000, you have to buy up to 11
more speakers and 2 subs to get the fullest as well as an additional 2
channel amplifier. You get 9 amplifiers built in to the receiver and
an extra 2 channels out which you attach to a second amplifier.
Certainly, 9.2 would be sufficient.

For a goof today I went and looked at a ultra high end receiver. I
mention it here on the Mac list because it was very configurable via
safari which I actually tried and loved. You can set up all sorts of
32 bit audio processing, automatic room equalization, but the kicker,
Dolby Atmos and it’s own proprietary 3d emersion algorithm along with
DTS Neo and several other objected oriented DTS formats. Whoa! I
listened to an 11 channel setup, believe it or not, 11.2 where you
had
11 channels and 2 subwoofers. Again, whoa! Several sets of speakers
were set in the front for an expanded sound stage in front of you,
sides, back, and yes over head with 2 subwoofers that automatically
adjust so the base is distributed evenly around the room rather than
from a single point. On the video side it upscaled everything to 4K
60 FPS complete with HDR video or you could genitive pass through if
you wanted. You could also break up the 11 channels and have
different speakers for different zones so say 7.1 in the mail room
and
5.1 in the other or 5.1 and several sets of 2 etc. The thing that
blew me away though was the automatic calibration and setup. What
would have taken an audio degree in my day to configure used 8
microphone pickups that you scatter around the room and it uses pink
noise and other pulses to set itself up. Also included WiFi so you
can grab your XM or other streamed content, it automatically software
updated and you could buy extra CODECS and decoders for different
surround standards. All for $3000 which ain’t bad when you consider
how many features you get. There’s also an App for the iPad or
iPhone
to configure, supports bluetooth and includes preamp outs in case the
260 watts per channel CLASS AB amps weren’t good enough that are
included. You also get the full 260 watts class AB on all channels,
not just the fronts. Each channel has 4 32 bit convertors and they
use 4 32 bit audicy DSP processors for signal manipulation. (It does
a hell of a lot of math, something like 10 billion flops)

You start adding speakers, installation of the speakers, cables, more
decoders and such and you get in to very tall money very quickly but
when I buy my next free standing house instead of a town house I know
the way I’m going. The other interesting thing it supposedly had a
mechanism that isolated the sound with in your sound space so you
didn’t blow your neighbors out of their units next door. I’m
skeptical with over a kw of power. They didn’t have Sonos at this
store, wasn’t high enough end for them:) but at least I found myself
a store that’s still hanging in there against the big box shops and
amazon.

Subject: Re: Question about the Sonos products

Hi Scott,

We recently set up a Sonos system.

The Play One is a small speaker. It can do basic stereo sound, or it
can work as part of a pair, or as part of a 5.1 surround system. I
am not sure about part of a 7.1 system, and Sonos does not yet do
upmos for vertical spacial hearing.
The Play Three and Play 5 can both also function as either a stereo
speaker (laid horizontally,, or as the individual side of a stereo
pair (laid vertically). Just set it up in the Sonos app.

My fiancé wanted to hire someone to set up the system, so I agreed
that if I could not figure it out fairly quickly, we would bring in
an installer. I am good with this sort of thing, but set-up is so
simple that she could do it.

We purchased a PlayBar, two Play Threes, and three Play Ones. I was
originally going to match the Play Threes with the PlayBar, but the
store only had one in stock, so we put the single Play Three in the
bedroom (where I was going to put a Play One. That would leave a
play One for the bathroom and a play One for our office. The Play
Ones worked so nicely with the PlayBar that the office was upgraded
to the other Play Three. Oh, the family room also has the Sonos Sub.
I really like this Sub. It is a brick. The speakers are inside and
face each other. This allows for excellent deep base without any sub
rattling. Sonos says it is because the two speakers facing each
other cancels the rattle distortion out.

All the speakers can play the same thing, or each room can play
different things, and changing is very easy in the app. My sighted
partner absolutely loves the simplicity of the app. I love its
accessibility.

Sonos states stereo pairs may only be created between two speakers
of same type. So, one could use a play Three as center speaker, two
Play Fives as front stereo speakers, and two Play Ones or Threes as
surrounds, with the Sub for proper 5.1 sound, or one can use the
PlayBar for the front with the Sub and surrounds. Sonos performs all
the calculations for excellent sound internally within all the
speakers. They sound quite good, and my fiancé says they sync
perfectly with the visuals.

When we first started playing music through the surround system, the
Play Ones were set on surround enhance mode. I changed it in the
Sonos app to have the surrounds act as full speakers for music
playback. Sonos remembers the change, and switches automatically
depending on whether source is video or music. And, for set-up /
video sound, it is just a digital optical cable from the TV to the
playBar. Sonos uses the wifi in the house to create its own network.
However, if there is no wifi network, the speakers can be connected
together with cat5 cables.

As for sound, I have heard better speakers. A good friend has a pair
which cost him $4,000 per speaker. Those sound fantastic. Sonos is
not quite that good, and does not play anywhere near as loud. But,
they sound better than anything I have owned before. They have
excellent sound definition and excellent sound and frequency
separation. Each speaker in the unit has its own digital amplifier,
and this makes a significant difference. Also, Sonos regularly and
automatically rolls out updates. The system updates late at night
when not working, and they improve automatically.

Kind regards,

the play 5. Do you need two of these for stereo or do you get
stereo sound from 1? Also, to do 5.1 am I reading on their site
correctly that I’d put a play bar under the TV, run an optical line
to that and then put to play 5 speakers in the back of the room?
Can I pair more than 2 say 4 if I want to simulate 7.1 or is 5.1
the limit? I know the app is accessibility from the list here but
how is it for sited users, very simple? Anything else I should get
with these like speaker stands or how do they mount, do you need
special brackets? Any pointers would be most appreciated. This
looks really cool actually I might have to get one and have another
accidentally fall in to the cart. Can you try these out at Best
Buy or other stores or they only available online? Any input would
be most appreciated.
