Andrew, Thanks for your reply.
I got the macbook pro from eBay so am not sure the year. it said it was
the last version to have the DVD drive, probably 2012. it works quite
well accept for the speech loss.
I'll report it to accessibility.
right now I'm running Samantha.

Subject: VoiceOver losing speech on Macbook
I'm afraid that was my experience too on my late 2010 macbook air. I
had to give up using Alex for this not to happen. What age is your
computer? I've reported it to accessibility at apple. You may wish to
report it too.

Hi,
I have a Macbook pro 13 inch with 16gb ram and a TB SSHD. This is the
one that has the DVD drive on the right side.
I have the latest mac os installed on it.
From time to time using Alex the speech will just die. I can still
move around the screen and hear the VO sound effects. If I toggle VO
with command F5 it doesn't come back. I must press and hold power to
get the computer up and running again.
Does anyone have any suggestions, maybe if I were to use another voice
other than Alex?
ChrisI could be in the middle of navigating around and poof, no speech.
It is random.
