Hello,

Most consumer hard disk drives are just not meant for long term reliable use 
especially if they are subject to changing temperatures and laptop use. If you 
spend a little more I think the reliability of even Seagate and WD drives 
improves. Generally though folks with critical information will use a raid 
system. A raid will combine multiple separate drives into one virtual drive 
that increases your reliability. Also protecting your drive from sudden 
movement  while in use is essential The Take Control Books have a guide on 
backups that you would find useful, and their books are 25% off until I believe
