I”ve touch wood had no issues with them thus far,

I use a Lacie 1 tb spindle drive at work this has both USB 3 and thunderbolt
connections,
I use this for setting up the work machine images which is then transferred to
the main iMac machines.

Or go with an SSD drive. SSD doesn’t have the same issues as the old rotating
type and are much much faster.

Hello,

Most consumer hard disk drives are just not meant for long term reliable use
especially if they are subject to changing temperatures and laptop use. If you
spend a little more I think the reliability of even Seagate and WD drives
improves. Generally though folks with critical information will use a raid
system. A raid will combine multiple separate drives into one virtual drive
that increases your reliability. Also protecting your drive from sudden
movement while in use is essential The Take Control Books have a guide on
backups that you would find useful, and their books are 25% off until I believe
next week.

I have a few more questions on Time Machine back ups and external hard drives.
In researching for a new external drive, I’m learning that I’ve been rather
lucky that my Seagate has not failed on me. Apparently, Seagate and WD drives
failures are pretty common. Any recommendations?

Onto Time Machine…

Is there a way to copy individual TM back ups? Say I chose a few from each
year, could I copy and paste those onto a USB stick? For separate safe keeping?

How about deleting older back ups to make space? I’ve entered Time Machine,
but cannot figure out how to select then delete old backups.

Thanks,
Traci
