I use WD my Passport drives the USB 3 drives, I”ve touch wood had no issues with them thus far,
I use a Lacie 1 tb spindle drive at work this has both USB 3 and thunderbolt connections, I use this for setting up the work machine images which is then transferred to the main iMac machines.
