I would be fine with a percentage on the status menu if it was
accessible, fortunately there are other ways to get it. Yes, the new
processors have something called turbo boost, as far as I know, the end
user has no control over the setting, though there may be a hidden
command to change the processor speed.
Original message:
From all I've read, it's not as simple as that. The new processors have
two modes, one high-power and one low-power, between which they switch
constantly. Thus, any battery time indicator on the new Pro will almost
certainly be inaccurate, because a few minutes at high power could be
the same as a longer time at low power. This would cause the time
estimate to be all over the place. Apple therefore decided to just show
you the remaining percentage, just like it's done on iOS since the beginning.
Personally, I much prefer this, or I would if I could read it. :) I'm
so used to percentage only on iOS, and gauging time left by where my
percentage is at a given point in the day, that it makes more sense to
me. We all know no laptop battery time estimate is going to be very
good, so I like having the raw percentage and doing my own estimate.
Yes, there's more Apple could do here with better and more complex
algarithms and models, but for now, this feels like a good solution and
not the scandal some on Twitter and in the media want it to become. But
that's just me.

Command+space is actually the default spotlight command, you could
change that in keyboard preferences, but that's the default.

I don't knowhow, but my new Pro is set to open Spotlight when you hit
cmd-space. If you hold that down for a second, though, Siri appears.

One small correction, I think you mean Option+Space. :)

As of Sierra, you can. Hold down cmd-space until you hear the tone,
then speak. As far as I can tell, this is like iOS in that you can keep
holding the keys down, or release them immediately and let Siri figure
out, by a pause in your speaking, when you've finished your command.

Hi. This is all very helpful. Just out of interest, how do you use Siri
on the Mac?? I use it on my IPhone etc all the time, but didn't know
you could do it on Mac too.
Thanks.

Hey everyone, going to cover a few different things in one message.
First, as the subject says, has anyone else had issues reading the time
remaining or percentage of a macbook battery in sierra? This happens on
my 2010 macbook, and my girl friend's 2015 macbook pro. While in the
status menus, moving left and right with the voiceover cursor allows
you to get to the battery item, but it just says battery or something
similar, no time remaining or percentage, this happens whether the
option to show the percentage is checked or not in the menu. The only
way I know of to get around this is to check it in the energy saver
settings in system preferences. Interestingly, you can no longer use
the regular arrow keys to navigate the status menus, you must use VO
navigation. I don't mind this, actually it's more consistent this way
since before, the arrow keys only navigated built in items like wifi or
the battery, third party items such as dropbox always have required VO
navigation to access them.
I can confirm that on the 2010 macbook, the same issue I had with my
2010 mac mini does happen, when using Alex, speech disappears,
sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes completely, again, switching to
a Nuance voice resolved it.
I actually got a Christmas present for myself, a new mac mini, the
issue does not happen on the newer hardware. I am using a fit headless
adapter connected to the HDMI port, out of curiosity, I decided to
disconnect it and see if voiceover was as sluggish as it used to be,
surprisingly, I didn't notice much difference. I didn't run it this way
for a long time, but I wonder if Apple has finally fixed this issue for
voiceover users. If not, the fit headless adapter is definitely a good
solution.
