Hi,

When messages are sent as SMS messages instead of iMessages, it is usually due
to either a WiFi or cellular data connectivity issue. That is, your WiFi
signal is poor, or you don't have a WiFi signal at all and cellular data is
having an issue as well. If you had Cellular Data turned off, or if you
disable the Messages app from being able to use cellular data, and WiFi signal
was poor, this could also happen. In addition, if you're on a different
cellular network than your regular carrier, and if you have Data Roaming turned
off, with the poor WiFi connection, you may see the same results.

Try the following to attempt to determine the problem.

1. Go into Settings, Messages and ensure that iMessages is enabled.
2. Turn off the "Send as SMS" option.

This will force your iPhone to send the message via the iMessage protocol and
will not transfer to SMS if a problem exists. The message will simply not be
delivered if there are connectivity issues. Send a few messages to each other
and see what transpires.

WiFi Assist could also contribute to this issue, although, if working properly,
it should still go out as an iMessage, it would just use cellular data instead
of WiFi.

Let me know any results.

Later...

Hi!
Here’s a strange problems for ya!
My friend and i has Imessage turned on but no Imessage is sent.
They come as sms instead.
We have both tried to turn off and on Imessage and logged in and out from
Icloud.
No go.
The strange thing is that we have other friends each that has imessage and that
is working like a charm.
But not between me and this guy.
He has an old Iphone 5 and i have my Iphone SE.
Its not the biggest deal in the world and i’m sure i will find something
digging through google but i’d thought i might ask here first.
Blessings and thanks in advance.
