I am not a heavy user, but I have both apps. It may come down to how you want to use the app. If you are comfortable with one of the free options for turn-by-turn navigation such as Google or Apple Maps, BlindSquare may do just fine. That would be my choice on a budget. It may come down to preference for the way things work. I like that BlindSquare can be set to alert you as you approach said places. I created saved places for the bus stops I most commonly use and use BlindSquare to let me know when to get off rather than rely on the automated announcements from the buts that don’t work half the time or the driver who forgets.
Nearby’s advantages, as I see them, are these: The navigation is integrated and designed with the blind in mind. Transit is also well integrated, though I can’t compare it to BlindSquare’s implementation since I haven’t used that part of the app since they added it. Finally, the ability to use POI databases other than BlindSquare may be a selling point since the FourSquare database has a lot of junk in it. BlindSquare is less expensive. It has a better developed category based search system for exploring a new area. It has the aforementioned ability to set alerts for favorite places without the need to track them specifically on a given trip. Both apps lack predictive search capability and that is something I wish they had. My 2 cents. > On Mar 1, 2017, at 7:12 AM, Donna Goodin <[email protected]> wrote: > > Hi all, > > Now that we're moving back to a real city--at least relatively speaking--I'm > thinking about using my phone a little more for GPS and related tasks.
